THE VOCAL STUDIO

We use truly world class equipment and our dedicated recording room has excellent sound proofing/acoustic treatment and it is very much the perfect size for recording vocals.

The studio provides a very supportive, relaxed and comfortable environment that will help you perform better and give your best.

If you are looking to add some great sounding vocals to your recording to make it really special, without breaking the bank, look no further!

VALVE MICROPHONES

For vocal recording, nothing comes close to the sound captured by a valve microphone. Valves add warmth, gentle compression and additional harmonics that are very flattering to the human voice. Because of the subtleties they can pick up, they make vocals sound very intimate and give the feeling that the singer is right in front of you.

Wunder Audio CM7-GTS

This is a highly rated remake of the most revered vocal microphones of all time: the Neumann U47. The Wunder Audio CM7-GTS is a wonderful sounding mic with very fine detail, yet smoothness on top.

“The Wunder Audio CM7 is the best vocal mic I’ve ever sung through in my life. Period”.
Mike Jasper, TapeOP review

Telefunken USA AK47

A valve microphone with a warm and “airy” tonal character, which brings out a lot of detail in a voice without getting too trebly.

“I got a great sound both really close to the singer and 12-14 inches away. In fact, it seemed that wherever I pointed it I got a positive result.”

LARGE CONDENSER MICROPHONES

Neumann U87ai

The U 87 Ai is an industry standard microphone that – no doubt – you have heard in countless of your favourite records.

“On both male and female vocals, the lows and mids have that magic combination of warm and full without ever becoming heavy. And the highs are have a warm clarity, never too sharp or sibilant”.
Paul Narang, Soundref review

AKG 414xls

A great, natural-sounding mic that is very useful to when you want to add a true sense of perspective and depth to your vocals.

“These new mics successfully uphold the classic C414 tradition for sound, while their extended dynamic range, greater sensitivity, and very low background noise make them suitable for the most demanding music recording tasks”.
Paul White, Sound on Sound review

DYNAMIC MICROPHONES

Dynamic microphones excel at capturing loud and aggressive vocals, being extremely well suited for rock, punk, metal and similar musical styles. Though depending on your music style and voice characteristics, these can work very well for more delicate singing too.

Sennheiser 421

Excels in making vocals cut through a busy, loud mix.

Shure SM7b

Used by artists as varied as Fleetwood Mac, U2, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica.

Sennheiser 441

One of the smoothest dynamic microphones available, with a very extended high end.

Electrovoice RE20

A studio classic: deep, rich and fairly balanced.

A variety of great microphones is essential to find what sounds best for your specific voice and style.

However microphone preamplifiers (amplifying the signal of a microphone in order to be able to record it), converters (translating the signal into the digital realm), compressors (adding specific characteristics to the sound and evening out the dynamics of your singing so that they sit in the mix better) and outboard like equalizers and reverbs are as important.

If you are a vocal recording novice, this may mean very little to you! What is important for you to know is that the tools we use are the very same that you find in the big studios, and that produce amazing results.

For those of you experienced in studio recording, here is a list of my favourite outboard for vocal recording and post production available at our studio.
